Martina Hansen's Hospital

Until 2025, Martina Hansens Hospital in Bærum Municipality was owned by the foundation Martina Hansens Hospital AS. The hospital is now owned by Vestre Viken HF. It is one of Norway’s leading specialist hospitals in orthopedic surgery, rheumatic surgery, and rheumatology. In 2015, the hospital initiated plans to expand its facilities with a new wing to increase patient capacity, improve operational efficiency, and adapt existing spaces to meet the standards of a modern hospital. The original buildings from 1936, along with the surrounding outdoor areas, were designated as a cultural heritage preservation zone, an important premise for the project’s development. The expansion was subject to detailed zoning regulations with strict requirements for design and material quality.

The hospital has since been expanded with a new wing, and the existing main building has been renovated to accommodate new functions and operational changes. Outdoor areas have been adapted to the new layout and developed in accordance with zoning requirements.

All existing hospital functions have gained increased capacity through internal renovations, reorganization, and additional space in the new extension. To ensure functional departments, it was essential to create a seamless transition and minimize walking distances between the existing building and the new wing. Therefore, the same floor heights were used in the new construction as in the original 1936 building, which placed high demands on the planning and execution of technical systems.

The existing green structure has been preserved, and necessary interventions in the landscape have been minimized to maintain the natural forested character surrounding the hospital.

The project was developed in close collaboration with the hospital through a participatory process, focusing on operational transformation and spatial design. Additionally, close cooperation with the Cultural Heritage Department of Viken County and the Building Permit Department of Bærum Municipality ensured compliance with detailed zoning requirements.
