SEOPP – Energy Upgrading of Single‑Family Houses

Ratio has carried out several pilot projects for the upgrading of single‑family homes as part of the research programme SEOPP – Systematic Energy Upgrading of Small Houses, led by SINTEF. The research project focused on energy‑efficient refurbishment of standard house types from 1960–1990. The solutions achieved energy performance levels close to current requirements for new buildings, while also providing improved comfort and enhanced living qualities.

The house is a typical prefabricated home from 1975, upgraded to Enova Level 2, equivalent to a low-energy standard and slightly better than current requirements. A house with an uninsulated basement was to receive new solutions to minimise energy demand and improve comfort, and the client also wanted to reorganise the layout to better suit a family of five. The goal was to increase living space on the main floor and make better use of the lower level.

The renovation has resulted in a comfortable and stable indoor climate throughout the home, along with significantly reduced energy consumption.

The house, originally built in 1965, has been upgraded to Enova Level 2—meeting a low-energy standard that exceeds current building requirements. Alongside the energy improvements, the renovation introduced open layouts, universal design, better spatial efficiency, additional living space in the lower level, and increased daylight.

The aim was to unlock the home’s potential within its existing footprint, adding as little new area as possible, while adapting it for a family with three children. A cold and drafty structure was transformed through solutions that reduced energy demand, improved comfort, and a reconfigured interior to better suit the family’s needs.

The result is a home with a stable, comfortable indoor climate and significantly reduced energy consumption.
