The New Hospital in Drammen serves as a local hospital for the municipalities of Drammen and Lier, as well as parts of Asker (Røyken and Hurum) and Holmestrand (Sande). It also provides regional services for the entire Vestre Viken area. The hospital includes integrated facilities for somatic care, mental health services, and interdisciplinary specialized addiction treatment.
The site at Brakerøya is located near Drammen city center, in an area that extends into the neighboring municipality of Lier. The area has been rezoned from industrial use to urban development. The hospital benefits from a central location with close proximity to public transport and the Brakerøya train station. The surrounding infrastructure includes good road connections and new routes for cyclists and pedestrians.
The site is bordered to the south by the Drammen River and the fjord, and to the north by Jacob Borchs gate and Drammen Health Park. The hospital design responds to the character of the site, with an urban frontage of taller volumes facing Jacob Borchs gate, gradually stepping down toward the river and fjord. Views and connections to nearby outdoor areas and the broader landscape have influenced the placement of various functions.
The hospital is organized around a shared main entrance located in an access building. A continuous glazed internal street connects the different building volumes and functions, providing daylight, views, and aiding orientation and wayfinding. All treatment areas, testing facilities, and inpatient units are accessible via stairs and elevators from this internal street.
The hospital was officially opened on October 23, 2025
